Students go on excursions to prisons to socialize with hardened criminals

Students get excursions to Prison to talk with hardened criminals. Only in Australia i guess. I wonder why?

This is just pure bullshit. The program will just desentisize students to crime - and some of them didn't feel the criminals deserve to be there.

Why don't the same teachers take the students to talk with

1. ER medical staff
2. Fire fighters
3. Medics who have to deal with stupid druggies.
4. The trauma ward to see victims of drunken car crashes
5. Victims of Fraud and Theft

In short the principals and teachers ought to be taken to the Roman Circus and get chased by hungry lions and tigers for awhile.

I beg to differ. Visiting the prisoners may have the positive effect of educating them that crime doesn't pays. Besides, i am sure they will select some good behavior inmates to talk to them and perhaps let them know the ill effects of committing a crime. I am also sure the visit is highly supervised and as such, it will be beneficial to the kids. Not everything in life is in black and white.

Sad to differ from your point of view - but read the article. The inmates were trying to play mind games with the students - convincing them that they don't belong in prison - and to gain their sympathy and respect. The prisoners were only sorry for being in jail not for the crimes committed. In your scenario, perhaps it would work. But not in this care.

Visits will be sanitised to the point that the kids will get a censored version of what prisons are really like. If not, some students would go home with Psychological damage and become bed wetters. it's only common sense that to protect the more sensitive students, you'll make it look mickey mouse to the less sensitive students.

There is no way that students will see Gang warfare, race conflicts, violent riots, self mutilation, psych prisoners, paedophiles, effects of drugs on prison and the trade of prohibited goods on teh inside etc.

I agree with YM... you need to let them see those who deal with the issues, not the issues themselves, as they are either very confronting or else they are not confronting enough to work for all students.

Well that's what you get when you have Labor and Union teachers in charge of the curriculum. Its actually quite mind boggling - to most Singaporeans- what sort of stupid shit goes on in Australian Schools - and gets accepted. One of my friends found a dead kangaroo with a stick shoved up its arse in her Canberra University dorm. When she complained - she got ostracized.
