Handel's Largo Grand Concert Opus 3 No. 2

Beautiful. That oboe play is so rich, tender, sweet and haunting.

Some information about the record...

Handel's Largo from Concerto Grosso Op.3 No. 2.

Published by Hyperion Records

Handel's six concerti grossi, Opus 3, first appeared in print in 1734, a time when the composer's finances were in a particularly poor state. His operas were no longer drawing the crowds, a rival opera house was attracting his audience and poaching many of his star singers. The original publisher John Walsh had met with success in printing the concerti grossi (Best of) of other music legends and hoped to repeat the success with Handel's works. The music was mostly recycled movements from operas, oratorios and anthems and possibly Handel may not have even known Walsh was going to publish them - musicial piracy was also rife in the 18th century. The 2nd concerto in the set contains a ravishing Largo movement, with repeated chords in the upper strings and arpeggios from two cellos accompanying a solo oboe's glorious melody.

Alexandra Bellamy plays the Oboe in this beautiful piece.
